Spreadability / People Doing (Covers, Lip Syncing)

The Spreadability of the songs is what creates the ability for the lip sync videos and cover videos to be created. When looking at the lip syncing videos we notice the majority of the ones created on YouTube and what pops up first when searching “lip sync” we can see the majority of the videos are “fail” videos, or based off humor instead of based on talent. Thats when people say that lip syncing is talentless.

Lip Sync

The spreadability of the videos are hand in hand with who’s in the videos going viral when singing the covers or lip syncing what songs they choose. When starting in YouTube the chances of you becoming noticeable from your ability to Lip sync well is rare close to slim so the majority of the popular videos are of celebrities in the sing offs they have on TV or of people failing miserably trying to lip sync to their hearts content. They are hitting the humor that creates a stir, not because they can fake sing well, or they are videos of celebrities performing on SNL “singing” but completely lip syncing.

Another impact of the genres is completely based off what is “in” right now. For example right now one of the most popular songs of Summer 2014 with the Pop/ Teen Culture is Rude by Magic. Heres a cover of Billboards #1 since June 26, 2014. It uses humor to attract the audience while covering the new and upcoming song that is popular and “catchy”. The majority of people when just typing in “Rude by Magic Cover” this is the most popular video up now.

More about people doing covers, we see various types of people doing it for the views, for the humor, or for the popularity. A perfect example of someone who did covers and went famous and is a well known figure is Justin Bieber. He used to just upload YouTube videos of covers. His most famous that caught the stars eyes we the cover he did of Usher You Got it Bad. Usher himself saw the video and got ahold of Justin and made him a world wide sensation.

Some over Covers done are parody like ones. A well known YouTube Star that is popular for his covers is Dave Days. He’s done various ones from Alicia Keys, to Miley Cyrus. Some are just parodies while others are actually trying to replicate what the original artist was sounding like.

Other covers are done by really great singers that deserve to be published and seen as something more than just a YouTube Singer like, Alex G. She’s a great singer that does covers every week (almost). Someone with her talent uses the “cover” genre to try and become something more than just a YouTube singer.
